Trekking Preparation

Get Ready For Your Himalayan Adventure with Mission Himalaya Treks

Trekking in the Himalayas is enjoyable experience combining beautiful mountain scenery with rich cultural encounters and unforgettable adventures. Whether you are planning your first trek or are an experienced hiker, proper preparation is key to a safe, comfortable and enjoyable journey.

Mission Himalaya Treks is a well organized trekking company in Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. Our experienced guides and support team will be on hand to assist you throughout your journey, but preparing yourself physically and mentally before you arrive will allow you to make the most of your adventure.

Physical Fitness Readiness

Most trekking routes in Nepal are several days of walking on mountain trails, often with big ascents and descents. Many treks do not require technical climbing skills but a reasonable level of fitness is important.

We suggest you begin a fitness routine at least 6 to 8 weeks prior to your trek. Endurance and cardiovascular fitness can be improved by hiking, jogging, cycling, swimming, stair climbing, and regular walking. It will also make trekking more enjoyable if you strengthen your leg and core muscles.

If you are planning a high altitude trek like Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Manaslu Circuit or other challenging routes, then additional fitness training is highly recommended.

Mental Preparation

A Himalayan trek can be physically demanding and at times unpredictable. Weather, trail conditions and itineraries are subject to change without notice. When challenges arise, a positive attitude, flexibility and patience will make the experience enjoyable.

Remember, trekking is not a race. Walking at a comfortable pace and taking in the surroundings will enhance your journey.

Choosing the right trek

It is important to select a trek that is suitable for your fitness level, time and interests. Mission Himalaya Treks offers a variety of trekking options ranging from short and easy to challenging high altitude adventures.

Our team will be pleased to suggest the most suitable itinerary based on your experience, physical condition and travel objectives. We also provide tailor-made trekking itineraries for individual, family and private groups.

Travel Documents and Permits

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned departure date, before travelling.

Depending on your destination, you may need:

  • Nepal Tourist Visa
  • Trekking permits.
  • National Park Permits
  • Restricted area permits
  • TIMS Card (where applicable)

Mission Himalaya Treks will help you to obtain all necessary trekking permits and will advise you on the visa requirements.

Travel Insurance

All trekkers are highly recommended to have travel insurance. Your insurance policy should include:

  • High altitude trekking
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Helicopter evacuation
  • Trip cancellation/trip interruption
  • Personal accident coverage
  • Loss or theft of luggage

Make sure your policy covers the maximum altitude you will reach on your trek.

Packing and Equipment

Good equipment can make your trek a lot more comfortable and safe.

The essentials are:

  • Comfortable trekking shoes
  • Warm down jacket
  • Waterproof jacket & trousers

Awareness of Altitude

Most of the trekking routes in Nepal go above 3,000 meters in altitude and altitude sickness can affect you. Being prepared is important and this includes knowing the symptoms of altitude related illnesses.

Symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Loss of apetite
  • Light-headedness or dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Problems with sleep

Our guides are well trained to monitor the trekkers for taking necessary actions in case of altitude related problems. The best ways to reduce risk are to adhere to acclimatisation schedules, stay hydrated and climb slowly.

Health and Safety

Your safety is our main priority. Our guides are licensed, experienced and trained in first aid and mountain safety procedures.

To ensure your health while trekking:

  • Drink lots of water
  • Eat healthy meals
  • Walk at a leisurely pace
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Do what your guide tells you
  • If you are unwell tell your guide straight away

Mission Himalaya Treks has established emergency procedures and will assist when the need arises.

Trekking season and weather

Nepal has trekking opportunities throughout the year but the weather conditions vary in its seasons.

Spring (March-May)

One of the best trekking seasons with stable weather, blooming rhododendron, and great mountain views.

Autumn (September – November)

The most popular trekking season with clear skies, comfortable temperatures and great visibility.

Winter (December – February)

Great for lower elevation treks and some higher altitude routes but temperatures can get very cold.

Monsoon (June-August)

Less people and a green landscape, despite the rain and mud usually in many locations.

We can assist you in the best season of trekking depending on your destination of choice.

At the Mission Himalaya Treks, we believe in responsible and sustainable tourism. We urge trekkers not to be disrespectful of the local cultures, traditions and environments.

We recommend:

  • Water bottles (reusable)
