Explore the Himalayas in All Seasons

Visiting Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan can be done all year round and each season provides a new outlook of the Himalayas. Colorful spring scenes, crystal clear autumn skies, quiet winter tracks and green summer scenery are each season with its charm. When to visit depends on the kind of experience you are seeking, be it trekking, cultural sightseeing, wildlife exploration, and a mixture of all three.

In all seasons, we arrange treks, tours and expeditions in Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan, at Mission Himalaya Treks. We know our locality and have years of experience which enables us to advise on the best time to travel depending on your interests, the date of travel and your destination.

Spring Season (March to May)

One of the most beautiful seasons to visit the Himalayan region is spring. With the disappearance of winter, the weather gets warmer and the scenery is also filled with greenery and colorful flowers. In Nepal, rhododendron decorate the hills in a beautiful color, red, pink and white, thus forming beautiful scenes in very many trekking paths.

The weather in spring is usually quite pleasant and hence a great time to do trekking and sightseeing. The season welcomes tourists worldwide as they visit popular trekking destinations like the Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang Valley, and the Manaslu region.

Spring is also a wonderful time to visit Tibet and Bhutan. The climate is good, mountain scenery is usually clear, and numerous cultural festivals are organized which introduce tourists to the local culture and way of living.

Summer and Monsoon Season (June to August)

Summer is also warmer in the Himalayan region. In Nepal and Bhutan, this time of the year coincides with the monsoon season where frequent rains turn the hills and valleys to green landscapes. The rivers run high, the woods are bright, the country is fair and lovely.

Although some trekking paths may be wet during these months, some places like the upper Mustang and Dolpo are a perfect trekking destination since they are in rain shadows which receive minimal rainfall. These exotic destinations present an alternative trekking experience to other regions in Nepal which are affected by the monsoon weather.

The Tibet is comparatively dry as compared to Nepal and Bhutan hence the summers are favorable to visit the place in terms of cultural tours and overland trips. Travelers who prefer fewer crowds and greener scenery often find this season surprisingly rewarding.

Autumn Season (September to November)

Many regard autumn as the best time of the year to visit Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. The skies are incredibly clear after the monsoon rains have cleared the air and the mountain views are quite frequently at their finest. The atmosphere is clean, the weather is not very hot and the conditions are usually constant.

Autumn is almost perfect weather to trekkers. Trails are dry, visibility is excellent, and the spectacular Himalayan peaks can often be seen in remarkable detail. These months are the busiest months in popular routes like Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Mardi Himal and Langtang Valley.

Autumn is also a good time to take cultural tours in Tibet and Bhutan. Tourists have the opportunity to enjoy favorable weather conditions as they visit monasteries, historical buildings and traditional villages. The season is preferred by many travelers as it offers great trekking opportunities accompanied by excellent sightseeing.

Winter Season (December- February)

Traveling in the Himalayas during winter gives a less crowded and peaceful journey. Although there is a possibility of coldness in some areas, particularly in high altitudes, most of these trekking paths are open and have beautiful mountainous landscapes with clear skies.

The treks in Nepal are especially pleasant during the winter season, when there are fewer people on the trails, and the mountains can be seen well. People who want to enjoy their privacy usually enjoy the quietness winter offers.

In Bhutan, the winter is a clear season and a much more relaxed traveling experience. The cultural tours are still a good experience and visitors can visit the monasteries, fortresses and valleys of the country without the big crowds of the peak periods.

Tibet has a lower temperature in winter, and people ready to accept this season are satisfied with less crowded attractions and another view of the culture and landscape of the region.

Best Time for Trekking

Most trekking activities are best done in spring and autumn. These seasons are characterized by warm temperatures, predictable weather, and clear mountain sceneries which are suitable to short and long trekking trips.

These two seasons provide the best all round trekking experience whether you are planning a classic trek to Everest Base Camp, a scenic walk through the Annapurna region, or an off the beaten path adventure.

Best Time for Cultural Tours and Sightseeing

It is possible to have cultural tours all the year round in Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan. Autumn and spring are very popular due to their favorable weather conditions and good visibility, but winter also brings tourists who want to have a more relaxed and quiet experience.

The historic cities, ancient monasteries, and traditional villages may be visited all year round, and each season is unique in atmosphere and perspective.

The Right Time to Travel

The best season ultimately depends on your travel interests. There are those tourists who are attracted to the colorful scenery of spring, others attracted to the crystal clear mountainous views of autumn. Summer attracts anyone who wants to see greenery and a reduced number of people, and winter is associated with calm and peaceful traveling.

Regardless of the time of the year, Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan will give you some memorable experiences. Every season can turn out to be the ideal time to your Himalayan adventure with proper planning and local guidance.
