Pikey Peak Trek is the newly opened off-the-beaten-path trek in the lower Everest region of Nepal. Also admired by Sir Edmund Hillary as the best Everest viewpoint, Pikey Peak is one of the most fascinating trekking in Nepal.
With no or less crowd on the trail, the enticing cultural and natural beauty of the trek is the perfect escape from the hectic city life. Of Course, this recently opened lower Khumbu region trek is more basic compared to the popular Annapurna Base camp trek and Everest Base camp Trek, you will still find something to embrace and appreciate.
Throughout the trek, you will get lured by the astounding views of various mountains, including the world’s highest Mt. Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Number Himal, Lhotse, Pikey Peak, Thamserku, and so on.
No doubt, these Himalayas views are enough to make your Pikey Peak Trek awesome, but the sunrise view from the Pikey Peak top adds extra charm and glamour to your journey.
Further, most of the part of the Pikey Peak Trekking trail takes you through the colorful and vibrant Rhododendron forest. Venturing the trek amidst the Rhododendron forest is simply no less than any heavenly walk.
Apart from these all, the farming land and the gregarious and benevolent local Sherpas, Tamangs, and Magars never let you regret the decision of joining this Pikey Peak Trek.
Though the region is less populated and not well-developed, you will still love the trek on quaint trails. Either from their cultural performance or their local dishes, the locals here will astonish you with their amazing hospitality.
Deep inside nature, the Buddhist monasteries and stupas along the trail allow you to immerse yourself in Buddhist culture and tradition. If you don’t know, let’s make you clear, the name of Pikey Peak itself is derived from the Sherpa Clan deity.
Locals of the Lower Khumbu follow the different routes to reach the Pikey peak summit. With the availability of different route options, the Pikey Peak trek can be completed in both short as well as long days. If you are completely fit and fine, then you can complete the trek within 4 days. However, finishing the trek within this duration is physically demanding.
If you want a comfortable trek in the lower Khumbu region of Nepal, then you can join the comfortable itinerary option of 8 to 9 days. Further, for a more relaxing trek, you can ask your tour operator. Here at Mission Himalaya Treks, we design the itinerary as per the trekker’s preference. Trekking to this region during the Autumn season allows you to enjoy the beautiful views of the Himalayas. As there will be no clouds to obstruct your views, you can see most of the mountains at this time. Moreover, the moderate weather during this season, lets you trek the region without getting much tired. With the limited clothes on your body, you can walk freely. However, at night the temperature goes down so don’t forget to carry essential clothes.
Due to the heavy rainfall, there are lots of chances of the occurrence of natural calamities during the summer season. Therefore it is better to avoid the summer trek. Furthermore, in this season, the leeches and other bloodsucking parasites are found in abundance in this region. Hence, there are lots of chances of getting bitten by these parasites. To prevent yourself from all these types of risks, you should skip the summer trek. However, with some precautions and safety measures, you can commence your Pikey Peak trek this season.
If you don’t want the crowd on your way, then winter can also be your perfect trekking season. As the trek does not go to an elevation over 5000m, with some precautions and preparations you can fully enjoy the winter trek to Pikey Peak. However, before trekking make sure to check the accommodation availability.
Flocked with a large number of trekkers every year, the upper Everest region trekking trail is filled with lots of luxurious and basic hotels and lodges. Compared to the Upper Everest region, the food and accommodation service in the lower Everest region is very basic.
The trail to the Pikey Peak takes you through the farming villages of ethnic Sherpa, Magar, and Tamang communities. You can taste the organic food which they grow on their farming lands. Further rice, potato items, bread, and noodles are some of the basic food items that you get to eat on the route.

Pikey Peak trek takes you to an altitude above 2500m, so to prevent yourself from altitude sickness you have to drink at least 4 litres of water each day. On the way, you can buy the bottled mineral water, but instead of relying on the bottled water, it is better to carry your own water bottle and water purification tablets. You can refill your bottle in any of the lodges on the way. some let you refill the bottle free of cost while some lodges owners ask for the money.
Like most of the parts of Nepal, the Lower Khumbu region is still behind in the process of development. Therefore, due to various reasons, there is no ATMs service available on the trail of the Pikey Peak Trekking.
While visiting the remote regions of Nepal, it is recommended to carry the Nepalese currency. If you are thinking of exchanging or withdrawing the money from the remote regions, then it is better to remove this thought just now. You have to do all these settings on the Kathmandu Valley. There are a plethora of ATMs and money exchange places in Kathmandu.
Before joining any of the trekking in Nepal, it is recommended to have travel insurance. Before booking the travel insurance, we suggest you ensure whether the company from where you are booking the Insurance covers the full travel insurance package or not. Normally your travel insurance must cover emergency helicopter rescue service even at an altitude above 2500m, personal accident, medical service, trip cancellation, lost of gears, and theft or damage of your baggage. In normal condition, the guide will take care of all your necessities. But with the Insurance, you will feel more secure. And don’t forget to provide a copy of your travel insurance to the company from where you are booking the Pikey Peak Trek. This will help them to rescue you even when you are not in the condition to speak a word.

Well, there are different route options available to reach the top of Pikey Peak. Depending upon your time availability and adventure preference you can choose any of the route options.
To reach the hill station of Pikey Peak you have to first reach Phaplu or Dhap. Around 8 to 9 hours of jeep drive from Kathmandu, you can reach any of these locations. Further, a public bus is also available. The roadway here offers you scenic views of the remote regions. Therefore, opting for roadway transport is totally worth it. However, if you want to reach there earlier avoiding the long drive, then you can go for the flight from Kathmandu to Phaplu airport.
Upon reaching Phaplu or Dhap, passing through the Sigane, Jhapre, Bhulbhule, and Pikey Peak Base Camp, you can reach Pikey peak top. On the way, you will get mesmerized by the incredible mountain views. If you are trekking this route in the spring season, then the Rhododendron forest hypnotizes you the most. After completing the Pikey Peak Trek, you have the same return option. A roadway drive or flight. If you are with a limited budget, then driving is a better choice. But for the affluent trekkers with limited time, the option of flight is perfect.
However, if you are one with enough time to spend in the Himalayas of Nepal, then I think Jeep Drive is the best option.
Alternatively, to reach Pikey Peak, you can also follow the standard Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking route to Bhandar. From Bhandar, head to the trail towards Pikey Peak.
Though the Pikey Peak trek does not ascend over the altitude of 4070m, it still takes you over 2500m where there is a complete risk of altitude sickness. For this reason, you have to be very careful regarding the altitude symptoms. To prevent yourself from altitude sickness, you have to take proper acclimatization rest and drink lots of fluid on the way. Further, you should maintain your pace and must avoid drinking alcohol and smoking.
If you notice any of the symptoms of altitude sickness like nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, vomiting, and headache you have to stop trekking and take some rest. Further, if you are with a guide, you have to inform the guide. The guide will see your condition and will suggest whether to continue the trek or not. He will take you to the lower elevation if required. After the descend, if your health sees improvement, you can again continue your trek. If not, you have to return back to Kathmandu and should admit to the hospital for proper treatment.
It is possible to do the solo Pikey peak trek. But as the trek is a newly introduced trek in the Lower Everest region it is recommended to trek along with the guide or porter. trekking along with them, you needn’t have to take the stress of accommodation, trail, and other necessities. The guide will take care of all the things and try their best to make your trip memorable. They will provide you with much information about each place, culture, and mountains on the route. Further, by trekking with them, you can connect with the locals properly. Apart from these all, they are your first rescuer, whenever you encounter any risks.
On the other side, the porter will carry all your luggage, so you can enjoy the trek completely without any burden on your back and shoulder. However, while hiring the guide and porter you need to be very careful. After all, it is all in the hand of your guide and porter to make your trip more interesting or daunting. If you book the Pikey Peak trek from any of the reputable and registered trekking companies in Nepal, you needn’t have to take the stress of hiring a guide or porter. They will take care of all the document formalities and also provide you a licensed guide. Among many local travel companies in Nepal, we Mission Himalaya Treks offer you the Pikey Peak trek at a reasonable cost with the best service.
