Mardi Himal Trek Overview

Introduction

The eight trekking day Mardi Himal Trek in the Annapurna Region of Nepal is a short trek that was first made available in 2012 and from that point, it gained popularity very fast. This short, straightforward trek with beautiful scenery everywhere, including a close-up view of Mt. Fishtail, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna South, is the reason for its appeal among international and national tourists. It starts and ends at Pokhara, Kaski.

Specifically on this trek, you will be heading towards Mount Mardi, which sits next to the magnificent Mt. Fishtail (6993 m). Mount Mardi is basically surrounded by the massive, Annapurna massifs. Despite only reaching a height of 5587 meters, many people find this mountain to be beautiful and intriguing. While heading to this beautiful Himal, you will be passing through the breathtaking Annapurna Conservation Area Project terrain and various villages such as Lwang, Dhampus, and Pritam Deurali.

The most popular trekking location in Nepal these days is the Mardi Himal Trek. For those who are new to traveling and wish to explore the breathtaking Annapurna Himalayas, this is one of the best and most appropriate trips.

Although Nepal offers a plethora of trekking paths for an amazing walking vacation, we want to emphasize again that the Mardi Himal path is the most peaceful and finest of these treks. The trails are peaceful and less frequented, and the hike offers amazing mountain views just outside the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking route. Apart from the Mountain views, you will also experience spectacular traditional Nepali village life, local cuisine and hospitality. You will have interaction with local communities such as the Gurung and Magar people.

  • Thirty percent of the trail is via ridges, so be ready for a spectacular close-up view of the massive Annapurna South and Hiunchuli on the left, and Mt. Fishtail, also known as Machhapuchhre, Mardi Peak, Gandarbachuli, and Gangapurna on the front, giving you the impression that you are much closer to the mountains than you actually are.
  • Depending on the trekker's physical level and time constraints, the Mardi Himal Trek route can be altered.

Mardi Himal Trek Route

As we mentioned above, the Annapurna region’s short, moderate-level Trek has just become open. This place is full of entertainment, hidden away in the western countryside. The trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp starts at Kande at 1770 meters and ends at Mardi Himal Base Camp, which is situated at an impressive 4500 meters. As it is a recently developed trekking destination in the West, trekkers from all over the world are gradually becoming more interested. Intriguing nature, raging rivers, deep forests, high mountains, and natural routes can be easily found along the Mardi trail.

Pokhreli Route:

The lively western city of Pokhara is the starting point of the Mardi Trek Route. After that, we go a short distance to the village of Kande in the northwest, which is situated along the Baglung-Pokhara route.

Kande starts our first section of the walk by going through a rural area in the direction of the Australian Camp. It then proceeds in the direction of Pritam Deurali along the magnificent track. This relaxing section of the trail goes through several rural communities near Pitam Deurali.

Pitam Deurali Route:

The trail passes through several rhododendron forests as it continues past Pitam Deurali. We travel through these dense woodlands that are scattered along the path. Sub-tropical forests with a variety of plants, such as juniper, bamboo, birch, oak, and fir, cover this section of the trail.

More than 500 distinct kinds of birds can be found in these areas, such as the Rufous Sibia, Blood Pheasant, Kalij Pheasant, Himalayan Whistling Thrush, Spotted Forktail, Himalayan Monal, and White-collared Blackbird. Upon observing the wildlife dispersed over the landscape, you will be astounded.

Our trek passes past a few little villages in Kokar, or Forest Camp, a remote location encircled by beautiful vegetation. Your rest will be chosen from a forest camp situated 2600 meters above sea level and an hour’s drive from Pitam Deurali, based on your Trek itinerary.

Then, to go to Low Camp, we continue through these thick forests and ascend for a while. At Low Camp, at an elevation of 2970 meters, the thick trees give way to expansive grasslands. With several teahouses in operation, the low camp is situated like a tiny hamlet. From Low Camp, you will have your first glimpse of Annapurna South, Mt. Fishtail, Mardi Himal, and Hiunchuli.

How difficult is the Mardi Himal trek?

It is thought that the Mardi Himal trip is a moderately difficult trek. The route makes it possible for both inexperienced trekkers wanting a less chaotic, shorter path and newbies with a reasonable level of fitness. As you are now aware this trail involves a steady ascent through varied terrain, including dense forests, alpine meadows, and rocky paths, that leads to the Mardi Himal Base Camp at an altitude of 4,500 meters.

Although technical climbing abilities are not required for the trek, the altitude, and steep sections can be difficult, particularly for individuals who are not physically fit and acclimatized. However, you can accomplish this trek even if you lack the extreme physical demands of more difficult treks like the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp.

Particularly on this trek, you have to be cautious in the high slopes and small valleys. Heading up to Upper View Point, the trail is entirely upward-facing. Walking is therefore not simple for some.

However, the trail is among Nepal’s easiest trekking routes. It is simpler to track than high-altitude locations. This trek is not too hard for someone in good physical shape to complete. A snowy season may make the path challenging. As a result, trekkers need to follow the guide’s advice during this time of year. So, avoid trekking this trail alone.

Mardi Himal Trek without a guide. Is it possible?

For those looking for solitude and a closer relationship with nature, trekking the Mardi Himal alone is a possible and enjoyable trip. The well-marked track makes it easy for solo trekkers, and teahouses en route offer lodging and food.

Higher elevations can present difficulties to solo trekkers. The possibility of altitude sickness and unforeseen weather changes could be the difficulties. So, it’s critical to be well-prepared. Check out our Mardi Himal Trek Solo blog page for more in-depth details.

Is Mardi Himal Trek Safe?

In general, people with a modest level of fitness and trekking experience find the Mardi Himal Trek to be safe. Compared to other high-altitude treks in Nepal, the trail’s height is reasonable and it is clearly marked. But there are risks involved with any trek in the Himalayas, like altitude sickness, unpredictable weather, and difficult terrain. There are several difficult climbs and descents during the walk, especially in the area close to the Mardi Himal Base Camp, where there may be limited, rocky, and narrow paths.

As a result, it’s critical to properly acclimate, maintain hydration, and pay attention to your body’s reaction to the altitude in order to assure safety.

How long is the Mardi Himal Trek?

The duration of the Mardi Trek varies from 5 to 8 days, depending on the trekker’s pace and starting site. The journey begins in the villages close to Pokhara and progressively ascends to Mardi Himal Base Camp, which is situated at an elevation of around 4,500 meters (14,763 feet), covering a distance of about 41 kilometers (25 miles).

Which is better, Mardi Himal or Poon Hill Trek?

Depending on your preferences, you can choose between the Poon Hill Trek and the Mardi Himal Trek. For those looking for solitude and moderate difficulty, the Mardi Himal Trek is the perfect choice because it is less crowded, gives a more isolated adventurous experience, and offers breathtaking up-close views of the Annapurna range.

However, the Poon Hill Trek is a great choice for novices or anyone with limited time because it is shorter, easier to reach, and offers stunning sunrise views across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks.

Mardi Himal is the better option if you appreciate a more peaceful and involving hike. Whereas, Poon Hill is the better option if you’d rather take a shorter but still beautiful hike.

It is possible to begin the Mardi Himal Trek straight from Kathmandu, bypassing Pokhara, however, this would involve more preparation and organization. Here’s how to accomplish it:

  1. Drive or Fly to the Trailhead:
    • From Kathmandu, you can directly hire a private jeep or take a public bus to Kande or Phedi, which are popular starting sites for the Mardi Himal Trek. It usually takes 8 to 10 hours to complete the drive, depending on traffic and road conditions.
  2. Start the Trek from the Trailhead:
    • You can begin your walk toward Mardi Himal Base Camp after you arrive at Kande or Phedi. The duration of the walk varies between four and six days, depending on your speed and the itinerary you select.

Although one may potentially begin the journey straight from Kathmandu, it is more popular to start in Pokhara, which offers more logistical advantages like better transportation options and the opportunity to adapt before beginning the climb.

Reasons Why Mardi Himal Trek is Worth It:

  1. Amazing Views: The trek offers breathtaking views of Machapuchare (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and other peaks. The ridge walking provides unique perspectives of these mountains.
  2. Off the Beaten Path: Unlike more popular treks like Annapurna Base Camp or Everest Base Camp, the Mardi Himal Trek is less crowded, allowing for a more peaceful and intimate experience with nature.
  3. Short and Accessible: The trek is relatively short (4-6 days), making it ideal for those with limited time or who prefer a less strenuous adventure. It’s also easily accessible from Pokhara.
  4. Rich Natural Beauty: The route takes you through diverse landscapes, including dense rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and rocky high-altitude terrain.
  5. Less Commercialized: With fewer trekkers, the Mardi Himal Trek has a more authentic feel, with simpler accommodations and a greater sense of wilderness.

The Mardi Himal Trek and the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek should be chosen based on your goals, hiking experience, and personal preferences. This comparison will assist you in selecting which trek could be more suitable for you:

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek

Pros:

  1. Iconic Scenery: Views of the Annapurna range, including Machapuchare (Fishtail), Annapurna I (8,091 meters), and other massive peaks, are breathtaking from the ABC Trek. With its wide views of these mountains, reaching the base camp itself is a great pleasure.
  2. Cultural Experience: Trekking through multiple Gurung and Magar communities offers a culturally rich experience. You can engage with the community, discover their customs, and take in the region’s varied landscape.
  3. Varied Landscapes: There are many different types of sceneries to be seen on the ABC Trek, including bamboo groves, terraced fields, lush forests, and high-altitude alpine environments. After all, the trek goes through the well-known Annapurna Sanctuary.
  4. Longer Trek: This journey is perfect for people seeking a longer trekking experience because it usually takes 7–12 days.

Cons:

  1. More Crowded: Being one of the most well-known treks in Nepal, the ABC Trek can get crowded on the routes and at tea houses, especially in the spring and fall when demand is highest.
  2. Altitude Challenges: Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp, which is 4,130 meters (13,550 feet) above sea level, can be difficult for people who aren’t used to elevation or have limited trekking expertise.

Mardi Himal Trek

Pros:

  1. Off the Beaten Path: In comparison to the ABC Trek, the Mardi Himal Trek is less popular and provides a more isolated and peaceful hiking experience. For those seeking peace and quiet in the wilderness, it is perfect.
  2. Shorter and Less Strenuous: The Mardi Himal trek is appropriate for anyone with limited time or who wants a less physically challenging journey because it can be finished in 4-6 days. At 4,500 meters (14,764 feet), the highest point of the trek is Mardi Himal Base Camp. This is slightly higher than Annapurna Base Camp, but because the trek is shorter, it is usually less difficult.
  3. Unique Views: Mardi Himal has breathtaking views of Machapuchare (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli even though it’s a shorter walk. The Himalayas can be seen from a unique viewpoint while hiking along the ridge.

Cons:

  1. Less Cultural Exposure: Compared to the ABC Trek, there are more opportunities for cultural encounters on the Mardi Himal Trek because it travels through more communities.
  2. Limited Accommodation: Since Mardi Himal is a less popular trek, there are fewer tea houses and lodges there. Basic lodging alternatives may need booking, particularly during the busiest times of the year.

Which Trek is Better?

  • Choose Annapurna Base Camp if:
    • You want a longer, more varied trekking experience.
    • You are interested in a mix of culture, landscape, and mountain views.
    • You don’t mind trekking on more crowded trails.
  • Choose Mardi Himal if:
    • You prefer a quieter, more peaceful trek with fewer people.
    • You have limited time or prefer a shorter trek?
    • You are looking for stunning mountain views with a sense of solitude.

In the end, these hikes provide unique experiences together with magnificent Himalayan vistas. The ideal option will rely on your time constraints, tastes, and desire for a traditional Himalayan trek with greater cultural interaction or something more distant.

Mystery woodlands, one of the country’s most stunning hikes

An approachable and welcoming hike. The steps are slightly painful at the initial moment, but you grow used to it. I need to say that the final week of February is a little soon to accomplish this. Beyond 3000 meters, there’s a lot of snowfall that necessitates the use of microspikes, and reaching base camp from the summit camp is difficult and not advised without assistance. Additionally, in February, the haze builds up swiftly and is completely obscured by 3 o’clock.
