Introduction
It’s been a century since people started losing their lives while doing the Mount Everest Expedition. Since the 1900s, hundreds of mountain climbers have lost their lives while attempting to reach the summit of Mount Everest. While many of them have lost their lives, most of their dead bodies on Everest have been removed. However, some of the corpses still remain there, and all of them haven’t been collected yet. Even though we know that they are still there, the authorities are unable to collect them because there are levels of difficulties in going up from base camp to base camp.
You know that Mount Everest is located in the death zone at a height of 29,032 feet (8,849 meters) above sea level. So, it is obvious that it will take a lot of planning and safety measures to recover those dead bodies on Everest.
Why are there Dead bodies on Everest?
The high altitude and the erratic weather conditions on Mount Everest present obstacles to rescue those bodies. Furthermore, the primary reason why it is hard to recover those bodies is the frozen dead bodies. The dead bodies on Everest can weigh over a hundred pounds. So, recovering bodies is a very risky and hard job.
Know that going to such altitude with unpredictable weather conditions requires skilled manpower with proper planning and equipment. However, records have shown that even with the proper resources, some of the recruiters have lost their lives while doing such tasks. So, it is not an easy job.
Another popular opinion that most people give on this topic is that recovery operation is possible with the use of helicopters.
We want to tell them that, the greatest elevation a helicopter could fly and land safely is at 6,400 meters (Camp 2). Farther above this altitude, helicopters couldn’t operate due to the low air density. In such conditions, the rotors of the helicopter will not be able to rotate properly.
To this date, the highest rescue made by helicopter was in 2013. The helicopter reached a maximum height of (7,800 meters) when the weather conditions were totally perfect.
Hence, we want to also add that the cost and expenses to recover dead bodies from Everest will be very high. It’s not like an authority or an organization will do it for free by risking their lives. If the conditions are right, then the dead bodies on Everest can be identified and removed from the place. If not, then the dead bodies will remain there forever until the rescuers feel okay to go for it.
Death zone in Mount Everest
As we previously mentioned, the “death zone” is located above 8,000 meters (26,247 feet). While passing this threshold, climbers will have to face harsh levels of difficulties. Such difficulties include – extreme cold, dangerously low oxygen levels, and belligerent conditions. Considering these difficulties, climbers must therefore be prepared to assess their own physical and emotional well-being as they ascend further into the danger zone.
How Long Can You Survive in a Death Zone?
Humans cannot survive for very long in the death zone due to the extremely low oxygen pressure. So for that reason, experts and climbing guides warn not to stay in the death zone for longer than 16 to 20 hours.
Moreover, oxygen isn’t the only dangerous factor that you will have to keep in mind. In this highest altitude zone, Climbers suffer the consequences of hypoxia, frostbite, tiredness, snow blindness, and severe altitude sickness. All of these issues arise when a climber fails to overcome a lack of oxygen and harsh cold. To overcome these, the climber will have to follow every step carefully and pay attention to their body. Doing these will then reduce the possibility of a climber facing a life-threatening situation.
Furthermore, dangerous terrain and unpredictable weather conditions are also factors that contribute to accidents during the Everest Expedition. Since unpredictable conditions are out of the hands of climbers, they cannot do much in such conditions. They can just fight with the condition and hope that they will overcome such conditions.
Hence, the journey to the Everest summit requires climbers to go ahead through the tightrope by putting their own lives at risk. So, for the sake of their own safety, they have to follow the instructions and make wise decisions.
Therefore, a successful ascent necessitates significant physical and mental preparation in addition to appropriate acclimatization. Also, it highly demands extreme caution, adaptability, and careful judgment from the climbers.

Deaths on Everest
In comparison to the previous record, the death toll had dropped in the early 2020s. In the years 2021 and 2022, only 4 and 3 deaths were recorded. However, in the years 2023 and 2024(Present), the record has soared to 18 and 8(still on count). Till May 2024, 341 people in total have lost their lives while climbing the Everest. So, while this much number has been reported, there is no doubt that you will see dead bodies lying on the highest roof of the world.
In Everest, there is an intense level of coldness. Due to that, climbers could only see a limited number of dead bodies while doing the expedition. It may be a tragedy for the dead climbers, but the climbers find such dead bodies on Everest as markers of their ultimate destination. As soon as the snow starts to melt, the dead bodies automatically start to reappear. So, the climbers may still see some of them in the near future.
What Kills the Most Climbers on Mount Everest?
The majority of the deaths on Everest are caused by acute mountain sickness, falls, hypothermia, crevasses, falls, altitude sickness, exhaustion, blizzards, exposure, and Avalanches. Since you will be crossing the mark of 8000 meters, the situation may get unpredictable and the possibilities of life-threatening conditions may even extend to more.
Now that we have mentioned different reasons for deaths on Everest, we want to emphasize that Acute mountain sickness, fatigue, and exhaustion are the leading causes that lead to other situations and eventually cause death. In high altitudes, Pneumonia, heart attacks, and strokes are the major causes whereas even minor injuries can also be life-threatening in such kind of atmosphere. Know that when climbers are out of form and they aren’t in good condition then they make bad decisions in the journey. Hence, at such times, climbers are vulnerable to losing their life.
When do deaths on Everest occur, while ascending or descending?
By considering all of the accidents that happened on Everest until 2006, the reports have said that more than half of the dead climbers have lost their lives while coming down. This is because most of the climber’s energy will get drained and their self-satisfaction will be present after summiting the mountain. When a person has reached their goal, the power of their fighting spirit will also lessen. So that might be the case as to why most of the climbers die while descending.
However, in recent times studies have shown that most deaths on Everest come while making an ascent (this research is still ongoing and the final report is about to be published). Further, we want to say that reaching the top of Everest will take time(probably 6-7 weeks). During these periods, climbers will have to acclimatize and adjust to the surroundings in a very organized manner. This much time is enough to cause any kind of accident, so climbers have to be very cautious while ascending or descending.
What is the ratio of successful climbers in the Everest Expedition?
The death ratio in the Mount Everest expedition is 1 climber for every 100 climbers. Moreover, for every successful climb, the death rate is 4%. Analyzing data from the past 30 years, we can tell you this fact.
Furthermore, if we talk about yearly, then the average death that occurs per year is 4.4. So, by looking at all of these data, we can tell you that you have a good chance of succeeding in this Everest Journey. But, remember that only with fine preparation and guidance, it will be possible. Remember that if one thing goes out of your control then you will be putting your life in danger. So, don’t just get overconfident by just looking at the data and the success rate.
Rainbow Valley in Everest
The area that is located below the Summit of the Everest on the northeastern ridge is known as Rainbow Valley. Climbers approaching the summit from the North Col route find this route very important.
Moreover, the term “rainbow” is very tragic. It refers to the colorful down jackets of the deceased climber that are dispersed in the area. Hence, it is not the meaning of the beautifulness of the area.
Simply, Rainbow Valley can be called the graveyard of the Everest region, where lots of dead bodies rest. However, being on the main track, the climbers are successful in removing the dead bodies and bringing them down.

Famous Dead Bodies on Everest
Now that we have talked enough about the dead bodies and deaths on Everest, we are gonna mention every single dead person in detail in the upcoming sections. But before that, we will be focusing on the famous dead bodies that are found on the Everest-

Green Boots – Tsewang Paljor
One of the famous corpses on the Everest is Green Boots. Originally named Tsewang Paljor, he began his ascent to Everest in 1996 with a team from India. While doing the ascent to the summit, he lost his life due to exposure.
Green Boots became a landmark on the main Northeast Ridge route until his body was eventually moved in 2014.
Before the retrieval of the body, the body of Green Boots was lying next to a cave that climbers had to cross to reach the peak. The body served as a sad landmark that indicates one’s closeness to the peak.
George Mallory – First dead body on Mount Everest
George Mallory’s body was found 75 years after his 1924 death. Mallory could be the first person to climb the Everest summit. But, sadly he had disappeared before anyone found out if he had achieved his goal.
According to reports, Mallory had experienced a fatal fall, resulting in a serious head injury and a rope injury that could be seen in his waist.
Finally, in 1999 his body was discovered. His upper body, Certain portions of his legs, and his left arm were preserved due to the freezing temperatures.
Francis Arsentiev – Sleeping Beauty of Everest
Francys and her partner Sergei ascended to the summit of Everest in 1988 without supplemental oxygen. Hence heading for the top, Francis was about to be the first American woman to attempt the climb without oxygen. But sadly, she and her husband reached the summit but never completed the return trip.
Despite reaching the summit, difficulties on the descent ensured their end with HACE (high-altitude cerebral edema) likely contributing to their deaths.
Francys’ final words, “Don’t leave me,” added a deeply human element to the tragedy.
Sergei and Francys both lost their lives on the mountain. Later, Francys’ body became a marker known as “Sleeping Beauty.” After nine years, her dead body on Everest was finally recovered in 2007.
David Sharp
David Sharp was an English Mountaineer who passed away in 2006. He made a solo attempt to reach the summit of Everest. It is believed he had reached the peak on his own. However, it still remains a mystery since Sharp never came back to tell the story.
By considering the reports, we can tell that he died from exhaustion later on. The further report claims that Sharp had probably taken a break or sought cover in the small cave where his body was discovered next to “Green Boots”. Later, he was frozen to death.
Scott Fischer
Professional climber Scott Fischer also perished in 1996. After Fischer successfully made it to the summit, he then began to suffer from exhaustion. He developed HACE during the descent and was unable to return. Thus, despite the greatest efforts of Sherpas and other climbers to assist, he passed away near the South Summit.
Hannelore Schmatz
The fourth woman to summit Mount Everest was Hannelore Schmatz. But the sad thing is, she is also the first woman to lose her life in Mount Everest.
She builds up camp in the death zone despite Sherpa’s caution, which finally ends with her giving in to exhaustion as she descends.
She survived an overnight snowstorm and made it nearly the rest of the way to camp before frostbite and oxygen deprivation caused her to collapse from exhaustion. Her distance from the base camp was about 330 feet.
She was visible from the Southern Route of the mountain. Her eyes were open as she rested against a long, ragged bag. Her death is one of the tragic deaths on Everest.
Now that we have mentioned to you some of the famous climbers and the condition of their dead bodies on Everest, we will now mention to you the deaths on Everest according to the year. All of this data is extracted from the list of people who died climbing Mount Everest’s Wikipedia page. However, we have sorted the data and made it easier for you by grouping them in a gap of 10 years. Check it out-

Conclusion
Now that we have covered a lot of topics related to the dead bodies and deaths on Everest, we want to say that the dead bodies on Everest are not there for display. It is there because there are many risks involved in retrieving them. As we talked about above, even with the full resources and manpower, retrieval is not guaranteed.
Moreover, if the conditions are perfect and there is no risk involved then there is no question of retrieving them. It will obviously be retrieved. Hence, to retrieve those remaining dead bodies on Everest, those bodies have to be in reachable spots with no risk involved at all.
Furthermore, we also talked about the death rate and the factors that cause deaths on Everest. We knew that the chances of accidents were low, but we also knew that, without preparation and guidance, one shouldn’t even think of doing the Everest expedition.
Therefore, it has been a century since deaths have occurred on Everest. So, an aspiring climber can learn many things from the mistakes and experiences of past climbers. Hence, we expect that anyone who is planning to step into this mesmerizing journey will do the essential preparation and follow the guidelines of the seniors and guides. Best of luck and have a great journey ahead!
